One of the most appealing things about Coonawarra for visitors (apart, of course, from our fantastic wines!) is its relatively compact size compared to many of Australia’s other famous wine regions. Now, this small but perfectly formed wine-lover’s destination is even more accessible by foot, via the Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail, which was launched in 2018.

Encompassing six wineries, including, of course, Redman Wines’ cellar door, Brand’s Laira Coonawarra, Ottelia, Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Di Giorgio Wines and Zema Estate, this walking trail is an easy 5km circuit taking in the heart of the region. While the level walk is plain sailing, even for families with a pram in tow, the trail path is unsealed, so we recommend you wear some comfortable walking shoes. Then, it’s simply a matter of following the clearly marked signposts – look out for the smart green ‘foot’ signs to guide you along the way – or download the specially designed app in advance from the App Store or Google Play, so you can map out your day before you set off.

Exploring the region at a leisurely pace is such a great way to experience the Coonawarra at ‘ground level’, taking in the beauty of the landscape and checking out what’s happening in the vineyards – perhaps even stopping for a chat with a few of the local winemakers as you pass through. If you’ve downloaded an app, it will also flag various places and things of interest along the route. You could also pick up some provisions from the Coonawarra Store, which offers a trove of superb local produce just right for a picnic. Or why not stop off for lunch at one of the wineries on the trail, such as Fodder at Ottelia.

Best of all, this leisurely way of exploring Coonawarra means you can take your time over your wine tastings. Even if you linger for only half an hour at each cellar door, you could easily complete your walking trail in a few hours, with plenty of time for lunch to add to the experience.
